I feel I am a good listener. I can receive and understand the speaker’s words. I feel I pick up on non-verbal cues and respond to them just as I would with words spoken most of the time. To be a good listener I must first prepare myself to listen. If I am feeling overwhelmed before a conversation I generally take a few minutes in “time out” before approaching the individual asking to speak with me. I have discovered this helps me concentrate on what they are expressing and remembering it too. Put the cell phone on vibrate and if possible do not look at it during the conversation. It is not effective to continually look at a watch while someone is speaking to you. This in my opinion will deter me from getting the whole message from the speaker. Grasping both the thoughts and emotions expressed is key to a helpful response. I struggle with someone giving me a lot of information at one time and I will ask questions as I need to, so I can respond accurately. Non-verbal communication is a bit more difficult as so
