Nickens1 Terrell Nickens Professor Eager COMP 101 21 October 2014 Authoritative Parenting What is the definition of a good parent? Wille Nelson once said “ You want to be a good parent and you want to be a friend, and it's hard to be both. You have to balance it as well as you can” (Nelson 1). He expressed that to be a superior parent you must be firm, posses’ unconditional love and be able to rear your children into making healthy decisions. In addition, you can be a compassionate parent who gives their child freedom, however you should also be able to hold a tenacious grip on your child’s mental growth. There are three types of parenting styles. Authoritarian parenting is a limiting parenting style in which parents are overbearing on their child’s preferences; they don’t allow them to have much freedom. A permissive parenting style is relaxed approach, it allows the child to have a lot of freedom and tolerant of their child’s behavior good or bad. An Authoritative Parenting style is the in-between parenting style, even though parents set high expectations for their children, they are given freedom to participate in activities and etc. Although my parents were both Western (permissive) style and Chinese (authoritarian) style parents.
