Exercise 1 – Identifying communication components in a news story The news story I have decided to use for this exercise is a blog post by Medium CEO, Evan Williams ( ). This is an example of verbal communication. The components of communication in this news item are: Stimulus – The motivation for this blog post is a reorganization of Medium’s focus and changes to their business model. The firm has decided to restructure sales, support, and some other business functions to directly drive their original mission. Filter – Evan Williams, the CEO of the company, naturally interprets this as news that will be hard to be communicated to the rest of the employees. As CEO, he must make a tough decision about laying some people off for the business to thrive, but also understands that this is a sensitive area and should be handled carefully. Message – The message he creates is intended for all employees of the company. This message is concise and demonstrates appropriate knowledge of what information the audience would be interested in. He starts off with the hard part of informing all employees about the restructuring of the workforce, but directly follows it up with the reasons. He justifies this piece of news by presenting metrics that show why this decision to restructure needed to be made to bring back the company to its original mission. He demonstrates compassion towards the employees whose jobs were eliminated, adequately thanks them, and tries to motivate the rest of the employees by closing with his excitement for the future of the company even in these tough times.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
