Colton Adams BISC 120 – EScience Marelby Mosquera 5 February 2018 Journal Analysis – Week 4 Summary Information The article I read was about a fungus that kills fruit flies. The fungus is part of the species Entomophthora muscae. This fungus enters fruit flies and does a lot of damage. It eats away at the insides of the fruit fly and multiplies inside. Normally when a fruit fly dies it goes through a process of “summiting”. This entails the fly going to a high place or high vertical incline and lifting up its wings and then dying stuck in that stance. The fungus makes the flies undergo “summiting” before they are to die naturally. The process allows the fungal spores to be able to eject from the host body and infect the surrounding area. The wings must be out of the way and the height allows for a larger range of infection. The scientists running lab experiments to see how this fungus develops and what it does to the flies. They
