CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Global Perspective Agriculture is an important economic activity in many parts of the world, forming a substantial part of their exports as well as proving a source of livelihood to a significant percentage of the people. One of the most important cost components in most farms is the cost of energy. These costs are incurred in a number of areas, including transportation, drying of grains, irrigation and pumping water. Twidell & Weir (2015) estimates that in the United States, the cost of energy incurred by farmers’ in their farms can be as high as 35 percent, depending on the source of energy employed. This has the impact of eating into the profits of the farmers, leaving them with very little earnings. At the same time, it has to be noted that the agriculture is responsible for about 13.5 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the world.
