Barbie Doll in China 2 Barbie Doll in China Question 1 One of the methods that can be used to analyse the macro environmental factors facing businesses in the Chine, is the SLEPT analysis. This methods of analysis aims at helping the businesses identify opportunities and threat that the environment presents. This section will look at SLEPT analysis by virtue of Barbie Doll. Social Factors There are a number of social factors that are impacts on the success of Barbie Doll in the Chinese market. First, unlike in Argentina and the American market, Barbie Doll is not a famous concept. It is foreign to the Chinese customers and has no relevance in their society. This will definitely impact on sales. Secondly, Barbie Doll is represents core of western feminism, which is quite foreign to the Chinese society. According to Wang (2012), the femininity within the purview of the Chinese culture, is soft and sweet as opposed to smart and strong, gentle and loving contrasted to dazzling and fashion forward as understood in the West, and presented by Barbie Doll. Lastly, even though the income levels of the Chinese have been rising over the past decades, Wang (2012) notes that customers are still value driven in making their purchase decisions. As a result, price is a major consideration and they would not readily buy a product expensively, when there are cheaper options, as well as knock-off imitations of Barbie Doll. Legal Unlike in the United States and other western countries, the legal environment in China is a bit convoluted. Kleinman & Lin (2015) points out that businesses may not be able to understand Chinese laws because they are structured in such a way that multiple interpretations can be assigned to a single rule. Secondly, Kleinman & Lin (2015) observes that the enforcement of intellectual property rights is weaker in China compared to the situation in western countries. As a result, it is important to register patents and copyrights in China as well. Alternatively, if necessary, important parts of a product can be manufactured abroad and shipped into China so as to protect business secretes. Economic Factors Chinese economy has been on an upward trend, with increased urbanization and rising incomes. What this means for investors is that the markets for their products is expanding steadily, with more people being raised out of poverty. With the economy growing at an average of 5 percent over the past few years [Sid18]. This trajectory is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. At the moment, China is the second biggest economy in the world after the United States, and it is expected to continue doing better. Hence, foreign investors such as Mattel Inc. should expect more opportunities in the Chinese market.
