Shabnam Qamar Bio 102 Section 3EG2 Extra Credit 1. Sickle Cell Anemia a) The mutation that causes this condition is called a missense point mutation. This occurs when Thymine and Adenine switch DNA strands and changes the coding of the 6th amino acid from Glutamic acid (GAG), which is found in people without the mutation, to Valine (GUG), which is found in people with Sickle Cell Anemia. This changes the shape of the hemoglobin molecule from normal to clumped (abnormal hemoglobin). b) The mutation is found on an exon because it gets transcribed and translated into an amino acid and specifically codes for Valine. c) This mutation causes this condition because the change in the base pair leads the coding of the amino acid to change which then changes the shape of the hemoglobin protein from normal to sickle shaped.
