Are Bicycles Really Safe in Wilmington? Megan Mcclellan. Daniel Fetner. To most people these names don’t mean anything. But to cyclists in Wilmington, N.C., they represent a growing issue. In May of 2017, Megan Mcclellan was killed by an 18 wheeler while riding her bike, and less than two months later, Daniel Fetner was killed as well. In Wilmington, a lot of students will ride their bicycles to and from classes at UNCW. While this is extremely helpful to the students, a lot of drivers in Wilmington do not understand the concept of “share the road.” “It’s terrifying when you’re driving on the bike path and someone flies by you. It really is,” said Eileen McConville, president of the Cape Fear Cyclists, Wilmington’s local bicycle club. “Wilmington is a beautiful city to ride in, but it can be really scary riding here. That needs to change.” Between 2010-2014, there were 190 bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles in Wilmington. In the city, the biggest issue that bicyclists seem to run into is a driver who rolls through signs without fully looking at their surroundings. Of the 190 accidents reported for those five years, 38 were for that reason. Following that was a driver pulling out of an alleyway and hitting a cyclist at 31, and then drivers turning left in the opposite direction at 19.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
