Solid-Liquid Extraction – Isolation of Trimyristin from Nutmeg Introduction Nutmeg seeds are made up largely in part by trimyristin, which is a combination of myristic acid and glycerol. This reaction forming trimyristin is shown below. The purpose of the experiment is to remove this pure substance from the solid seeds. This solid-liquid extraction is achieved through reflux that heats the solution but prevents any solvent loss. A reflux apparatus is comprised of a heating mantle, round-bottom flask, and a water cooled condenser and is effective due to the differences in solubility of the components in a compound. Gravity filtration, simple distillation, and suction filtration are then used to separate the pure trimyristin crystals. The melting point can then be determined and the percent recovery can be calculated. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
