Body Composition What is Body Composition? -Percentages are given Terms to Know -Abdominal=belly fat -Subcutaneous=fat immediately under the skin -Visceral fat= fat surrounding organs(meant to be a shock absorber, like a protector) - Anthropometry= height and weight measurements - BMI= falls under anthropometry -The rest we will define when we get there Why Measure Body Composition? -We wanna know where our fat is and how much fat we’ve lost -Its important because of the issue of obesity and diseases -Type 2 diabetes: insensitive it insulin -Hyperlipidemia: cholesterol -All these diseases are associated with obesity Composition of the Human Body -Essential fat: fat that is necessary Ex: visceral fat (your brain is very lipid rich) - Storage fat: what we all worry about: These are fat cells that we worry about how much is in there Fat free vs. Lean body mass Body Composition Techniques - Cadaver is the only accurate way measuremt of fat -Indirect is what all living this use - DEXA is the most complex
