When Voltaire says, “cultivate our garden”, I think it could be used a couple a few different ways from his reading. First, it could could mean that they need to take care of their own land and situations first. It can also be interpreted as showing the money and possessions don’t make him happy, but they can find happiness in the simple things of life. Many people don't understand the real meaning when someone says the pursuit of happiness. There is no true meaning of happiness it is something that is felt. This phrase can also reference to when he mentions us being responsible with creating our own destiny and we are responsible for our own lives. He uses the garden to represent our life and someone must take care of it or to make the best out of it. I think this is a great direct metaphor for us being responsible or our own actions. An example we can relate to would be when Candide searched throughout the whole story for Cundegonde. She was supposed to be his eternal happiness, yet when he found her she
