THE EFFECT OF LIGHT INTENSITY ON THE AMOUNT OF OXYGEN CONCENTRATION IN PLANTS ABSTRACT The goal of the experiment performed was to determine the effect of various light intensities on the amount of oxygen concentration in a plant leaf. Oxygen concentration was measured in plant leafs in various conditions, including varying light intensities and dark conditions of no light present. We compared the oxygen concentrations in light intensities of 5k, 10k, and 15k with light and dark conditions over a duration of 300 seconds. We hypothesized that if there was a high light intensity, then the concentration of oxygen would be higher because the rate of photosynthesis is higher, thus producing more oxygen. The leaves placed in higher light intensities in light conditions exhibited the greatest increase of oxygen concentration, while the leaves in the dark conditions exhibited no increase in oxygen concentration. Higher oxygen concentrations in higher light intensities suggested that greater light intensity leads to an increased rate of photosynthesis occurring. INTRODUCTION Photosynthesis is the process by which autotrophic organisms utilize sunlight to carry out chemical reactions. The light dependent reaction occurs in the thylakoid and involves the green pigment chlorophyll to absorb photons by the excitation process. Light is captured in the form of ATP and NADPH via the light reactions and used by the Calvin Cycle. The relationship between photosynthesis and aerobic respiration is that the products of one reaction are the reactants of the other.
