Objective of the experiment: To determine of a chemical formula of an unknown copper chloride by finding its moles ratio. We can determine the water of hydration in a copper chloride hydrate sample; conduct and observe a reaction between a solution of copper chloride and unknown hydrated and dehydrated samples; use the results of the reaction to determine the mass and moles of copper and chloride in the reaction; and, lastly, calculate the empirical formula of the compound of copper and chloride. Data and Calculation: Atomic masses Copper (Cu): 63.55 g/mol Chlorine (Cl): 35.45 g/mol Hydrogen (H): 1.008 g/mol Oxygen (O): 16.00 g/mol Mass of crucible 17.6411g Mass of crucible and hydrated sample 18.9999g Mass of hydrated sample 18.9999 – 17.6411 = 1.3588g Mass of crucible and dehydrated sample 18.6791g Mass of dehydrated sample 18.6791 - 17.6411 = 1.0380g Mass of filter paper 0.1923g Mass of filter paper and copper 0.6784g Mass of copper 0.6784 - 0.1923 = 0.4861g Moles of copper 0.4861/ 63.55 = 0.007649 moles Mass of water evolved 1.3588 - 1.0380 = 0.3208g Moles of water 0.3208/18 = 0.01782 moles Mass of chlorine in sample (by difference) 1.0380 – 0.4861 = 0.5519g Moles of chlorine 0.5519/35.45 = 0.01557 moles Mole ratio, chlorine: copper in sample 0.01557/ 0.007649 : 1 2.035 : 1 Mole ratio, water: copper in hydrated sample 0.02783/ 0.007649 : 1 2.330 : 1 Formula of dehydrated sample (round to nearest integer) CuCl 2 Formula of hydrated sample CuCl 2 2H 2 O

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
