Act I: Romeo Characterization Instructions: First read the three excerpts from scenes 1, 2, and 5 of the first Act. Then answer the following questions about the character of Romeo using properly cited textual evidence for each answer. The first answer serves as an example for you to follow. Format for citation: (Act.scene.line) Question Answer Textual evidence to support answer Why is Romeo sad in scene i? Romeo is sad because he is in love,  and the person he loves does not  return his feelings and has decided  to take a vow to become a nun. “In sadness, cousin, I do love a  woman” (1.1.212). “She hath forsworn to love”  (1.1.231). What is Benvolio’s advice to Romeo in scene 1? To go search for the girl he’s in love with. Then she hath sworn that she will still live chaste? Be ruled by me, forget to think of her. In scene 2, Romeo and Benvolio find out that Capulet is having a party and that Rosaline is on the guest list. Why is this significant?
