A lot of civilians left back in England often had no idea what was happening where the soldiers were. Things were reported by no one ever knew the extent of this. An example of the lack of knowledge on the war would be the amount of people who ended up missing in action or missing presumed dead. In the longlongtrail, a website that is specifically for educating people on World War One, it states that “526816 were missing, only 187861 were buried in graves with no name whilst 338955 were either never buried or never found.” This statistic is horrifying as this is only the British soldiers and there is over half a million soldiers who were unaccounted for. Many families were left with the trauma of not knowing what had happened to their loved one who was fighting at war. “ The effects of the war do not only exist during the war but much after as well. Many people tend to distance themselves from the rest of the population as their psychological health is not good.” (Wessells, 640). This also reiterates the point that the war has a lasting psychological effect on people that were around during the war. Toby was a character in Toby’s room, and he was a soldier who was missing presumed dead. This did not give his family at home any information on what had happened to him and
