Chapter 1 – media aesthetics Aesthetic Contextualism Responsibility o Contextualism stresses the close relationship between aesthetics and ethics. Pg.14 o We must be careful, because the technology of television and film gives us the ability to manipulate messages o Be concerned about the people who are viewing your messages, and what influence those messages may have on them. Selective perception o We seek out information that is constant with our expectations and prejudices o We can guide what viewers see through ways that we capture Selective perception- an automatic reduction of unnecessary details during the perception process Selective seeing – we see or hear only the things we are interested in. Chapter 2 The nature of light Light is a form of radiant energy Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that includes radio waves, x rays, satellite transmissions, and microwaves. Video, film and computer images Light is referred to having color temperature: o Sunlight: blue o Artificial light: orange o Fluorescents: green Light purpose and functions o Light is essential to lige o Light orietns us in space and time
