Lab Report 12 The Alcohol Content of Beverage Purpose In this experiment, we will calculate the alcohol content of a commercial beer sample using the density and specific gravity measurements. We will distill a specific mass of beverage sample, and will then perform the necessary measurements of the distillate to determine the percent alcohol content by mass. Theory In order to calculate its alcohol content, the beverage should be passed through a distillation apparatus. The distillation process will isolate all the additives from the alcohol and water, and will allow us to calculate the percent alcohol in its content. Because the alcohol percent of beer is quite small, the measurements should be very detailed. Therefore, we will use a pycnometer to measure the volume and mass of the distillate. To calibrate the pycnometer, we will fill it up with water, measure the mass of water at a given temperature and use the tabulated value of density of water for that temperature. To calculate the volume of the pycnometer, we will use the following formula: V pycnometer =( m pycnometer + H 2 O m empty pycnometer )/ ρ H 2 O Next, we will fill the pycnometer with the distillate and measure its mass.
