Final Exam Study Questions – Biology 440 1. Release of basidiospores from basidia is either active or passive in the Agaricomycotina. Basidiospores are dispersed in nature by wind (air currents), water and/or animals. In addition, the development and structure of basidiocarps often are closely related to basidiospore release and dispersal. Using Pleurotus and puffball ( Lycoperdon ) explain and compare how spore release and dispersal are related to the general development and structure of the basidiocarps of these fungi. Include the following considerations in your answer. a. Is spore release from the basidium active or passive? In both examples explain how the basidiospores are released from the basidium. b. How is gravity involved in the development of the basidiocarp and the successful dispersal of basidiospores via air currents? c. How does each of these fungi maximize basidiospore production? d. How are the development, structure and position of the hymenium related to successful spore release and dispersal? e. How does the stalk or stipe aid in spore dispersal? f. How is light involved in the development of the basidiocarp of each fungus? 2. Lichens are among the most successful symbiotic (biotrophic) associations in nature.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
