CH.3 Study Questions 1. What were some of the factors that made some observers believe that rock and roll was dead by the early 1960s? Some believed that the early 1960s was the beginning of the end of rock and roll. Many of the early rock era stars began to disappear from the music scene due to a series of unrelated events. Carl Perkins almost died in a car accident in 1956, Little Richard retired to the ministry in 1957, Elvis went into the army in 1958, Jerry Lee Lewis was shunned after news of his scandalous marriage broke in 1958, Chuck Berry was arrested in 1959, and both Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran passed away in 1959 and 1960. Also, many of the rebellious teens who enjoyed rock and roll were growing up and out of that phase. Rock music was also becoming increasingly watered down and not as intense. 2. Describe the influence that Dick Clark and American Bandstand had on the music business. Dick Clark had one of the industry’s largest independent production companies, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He owned multiple publishing companies
