The highest values for insolation received at the Earth’s surface occur over the continents between 25° and 30° north and south latitude, although the greatest amount of solar radiation reaching the top of the atmosphere is at the equator. What is the reason for this difference? [5 marks]. It is because the earth’s thermopause intercepts with insolation. The curvature of the earth and angles of insolation determine the amount of energy received at a latitude. Lower latitudes receive or concentrated energy due incoming solar rays at a 90° angle. The higher latitudes receives slanting rays and diffused energy. Also, lower angle rays towards the poles must pass through a greater thickness of atmosphere which results in ore energy loss due o scattering, absorption and reflection. 2. The mean albedo value for latitudes 10°–20°S is less than that for latitudes 10°–20°N. Suggest a reason for this distribution. [5 marks] Albedo is highly susceptible to the reflection of surface shapes on the earth at different geographical locations. Fresh water snow ,cloud cover, surfaces( smooth or tough), cloud and ground cover can either decrease or increase albedo. In visible wavelengths darker colors have lower albedo and lighter colors have high albedo. Depending on the factors mentioned above the albedos value for 10°-20°S an be less than that for latitude 10°-20°N. 3. Explain why the South Polar Region has a much greater annual mean albedo than the North Polar Region. [5 marks It is because the land mass in the Antarctica is constantly filled with snow, which is highly reflective therefore, high albedo. The land mass containing snow is larger than the sea ice of the North pole. The Antarctica is increasing unlike the North pole whose ice bed is decreasing due to factors as climate change. Antarctica lies a lower latitude of 65° S compared to the Arctic , 75° 80°N, causing a greater albedo effect.
