Soc 1 Notes October 4, 2017 Notes I. Moral Panics II. Five Characteristics of Moral Panics III. Drug Panics and Sex Panics Underage drinking- deviance- becoming a bigger problem- especially when adults are proving minors with the alcohol. Create moral panics- Moral Panics - Ex- moral panics around Halloween candy, creepy characters wanting to abduct children. - Moral Panics- periods of intense concern that some person/group is threatening the social order. o Threatening social stability and feelings of safety- o The threat takes on a concrete form that are focused on a certain people that are blamed for this panic called the folk devil. - Folk Devil - the person/group portrayed as the threat to social order and blamed for the problem. o Gives you the sense that person being blamed is mythically evil- witch o People portrayed as the threat and aren’t the people who are really the threat. - Examples of Moral Panics - Salem witch trials- 1690’s - Holocaust- 1940’s - The Red Scare- 1950’s- in US panic about communist - Soviet Union -
