Candide’s Journey Voltaire’s Candide has million things good and bad possessing through this whole entire story. I would commend that this story is not only hopeful, but it is quite despairing, but Candide has a mixture of both. Towards the end of the novel Candide can see greatness throughout everything bad that he has went through in each chapter of life so far. However, Voltaire also makes it a point throughout the story to prove that evil and corruption exists everywhere in the world. The story narrator makes that point very clear by all the trials that Candide goes through. You cannot discuss Voltaire’s Candide without talking about Cunegonde a tad, because she was what Candide wanted throughout the whole story. Cunegonde is the daughter of a German baron who is Candide’s benefactor. Once discovers he discovers that Candide has feelings for her it becomes the opposite. In the beginning Cunegonde is young and beautiful and then toward the end of the story she is turn into an ugly disfigured individual. “Cunegonde pressed him so strongly that he could not go from his word. He consulted Pangloss, Martin, and the faithful Cacambo. Pangloss drew up an excellent memorial, wherein he proved that the Baron
