There is nothing inevitable about society. It is a remarkable accomplishment. Why did people decide to form a society”? and how do they remain successful and cohesive? - What are the freedom and rights- social contract - The social contract- why did we enter into a social contract- only makes sense when you contrast civil society. Benefits of Society? - Common for us to criticize the government. - Norms, laws, institutions - Hospital- tangible benefit - Feeling of safety- intangible - Roads- transportation systems- tangible—schools/education--- law enforcement - Stores/ super markets--- sewer systems - Intangible- feeling safe, order, stability, freedom on some level, Purpose of Society - Societies are established to ensure safety, order , and equality - People imbue government with power, and expect benefits in return.
