[ Total 20 pts ] One key question in the field of gut microbiome research is the extent to which microbiome composition in individuals is affected by genetics and by environmental factors. To study this question, the gut microbiome compositions in a large number of monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs were analyzed. Below is a box plot showing the similarities and differences in microbes from the bacterial family Lachnospiracae amongst samples from monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs and also amongst unrelated individuals (UN). The Bray-Curtis test was used to analyze the data. A higher Bray-Curtis value (y-axis) indicates that the pairs analyzed were more different from each other in terms of gut microbiome make-up, while a lower value indicates that the pairs analyzed were more similar. The Bray-Curtis statistical test was performed to measure the differences between pairs and this value is plotted on the y-axis. A lower Bray-Curtis test value indicates that the bacterial composition was more similar while a higher value indicates that there were more differences between pairs. The asterisks indicate that there were statistically significant differences in Bray-Curtis values between MZ and DZ groups, between MZ and UN groups, and between DZ and UN groups.
