Soc 1 Notes October 18, 2017 Papae3r- wealth inequality or gender inequality Stratification Systems - Both slavery and the caste hierarchy are systems that stratify peop0le; neither nas “social mobility” o Slavery- most extreme stratification on inequality- people considered property not people- slavery is abolished in every state o Sex slavery- human trafficking o Caste hierarchy- just as rigid as slavery- in terms of their being no social mobility- involves a social category you are born into and you are that the rest of your life. - can’t have jobs outside what is considered outside of your caste or marry outside your caste- most popular example- Hindu system- they made it illegal to discriminate because of their caste- Discrimination does widely still occur- people are subtler about it- discrimination is illegal in us but still happens - Class systems have some social mobility- based on wealth and occupation o Have some ability to change your o Based mainly on wealth (assets you own) and income o
