Chapter 9 Although the Constitutional Convention based itself around republican ideals to formulate a new government, conflicts arose between conflicting ideals, which were resolved after a series of compromises. This led to an era of political experimentation, exemplified by the Great Compromise and three-fifths compromise. While the Declaration of Independence proclaimed “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” the founding fathers were divided on how to administer such freedoms. Under the Articles of Confederation, the federal government had little power, and the constitutional convention was set to define the powers of government. In “On the Constitution” by Franklin, he admits that although the Constitution is flawed, a better constitution could not be crafted due to the delegates’ conflicting interests. Franklin states that, due to the selfishness, attaining such a constitution was an achievement. A notable compromise was the Great Compromise, which prevented the convention from falling apart. It
