Chapter 7 To compensate for debt incurred following the French and Indian War, the British government tightened control over the colonies and taxed Americans, exemplified by the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts. Such actions in London elicited an opposing response in the American colonials. In the 16th and 17th centuries, countries such as England, France, Spain, and Portugal competed to establish large overseas empires. Such colonies had the potential to amass incredulous amounts of wealth, and as a result, these countries adopted mercantilist policies, designing colonies to provide for the mother country. Such was the English sentiment towards the Americas in the 1700s. The Declaratory Act in 1766, where Parliament reasserts royal power over the colonies, indicates a tightening of control by the British government after the French and Indian War.
