Vanderburgh County 2 Population Economic Status The community assessed is Vanderburgh County, located in the Southern tip of Indiana. This area is a rural area, with one large city called Evansville. There are numerous factories in this area, along with three major hospitals, and tons of retail shops. The population size in Vanderburgh County, Indiana is roughly 179,703. The average income of the population is $42,396. The percentage of households at or below poverty level is around 15.6%. There are many different races/ethnicities affected by poverty in Vanderburgh County. The percentage of African American people that are affected by poverty is as much as 30% of the population. The Hispanic people are second with a rate of 23%. Next in line is the Native American population which is 18.3%. Following these populations are the white people with a rate of 8.5% and the Asians at 7.1%. As evidenced by these statistics, Vanderburgh County shows a high poverty rate among almost every race. [USC12] Although many people in Vanderburgh County are poverty stricken, only 7.8% are eligible for public assistance. The unemployment rate is as high as 5,060 people at this time. Due to the amount of people unemployed, many people seek insurance such as Medicare and Medicaid. The number of people on Medicare in Vanderburgh County is 30,736 people. Medicaid is not far behind at 30,476 people. What’s more, over 17,000 people receive healthcare that is uncompensated. [Com09] The statistics provided above indicate that there is a high poverty rate in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. Not only does it show the high rate of poverty, but it also points out how much healthcare is provided without compensation. Although there are many opportunities for

Vanderburgh County 3 employment, it is shown that Vanderburgh County has a very high rate of unemployment. All of these statistics insinuate financial issues in this county. Disaster Assessment and Planning Vanderburgh County, located in Southern Indiana, is most often affected by natural disasters such as tornadoes and floods. All ages can be affected by these disasters. During a natural disaster, there can be many health needs that may be present in the affected population.
