Discretionary benefits are not mandated by law. Many employers offer them as motivational tools and as an alternative to increased wages. The three components of discretionary benefits include: protection programs, paid time off, and services. Protection programs include short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, retirement programs and pension plans. These types of benefits, pay a certain percentage of the employees' wages or a specified amount while the employee is unable to work upon the employees' death or when the employee retires. Paid time off allows employees the opportunity to balance work and non-work issues. Employees can take time off and get paid for the time they are not at work for vacations, sick leave, personal leave as well as holidays the company observes. Most employers offer paid time off banks that don't include holidays, jury duty, funeral leave or military leave. Services consists of tuition reimbursement, day care assistance and transportation services, as well as wellness programs (Martoochio, J. 2015).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
