IMPACT OF RESEARCH COMMENTARY 2 Introduction Measles vaccination has decreased the incidence of the measles virus and is a very successful global public health intervention. This intervention has prevented millions of deaths, primarily in children. In the recent decades, this lifesaving intervention is under a microscope and is responsible for the development of an opposing force of vaccine critics. These critics are made up of activist parents primarily from the autism community. Kirkland (2012) noted that “invoking science has been the primary route of credibility for the vaccine critics, but it has become much more difficult for advocates to plausibly claim to have science on their side in the vaccine-autism controversy starting in 2003” (p. 73). In 2003, many medical publications came out with research findings that disproved Dr. Andrew Wakefield’s study that positively linked the
