1. In contrast to what many older generations believe about texting, discuss McWhorter's views on the subject. What does he think and why? McWhorter thinks texting it is a miraculous thing because of the way writing has evolved, how flexible yet complex the new structure of language has reached. 2. Describe the similarities McWhorter draws between speaking and texting. Texting is used as a mechanical form for the way that we speak, fingered speech. It’s loose in structure similarly in the way that we talk, no one thinks about capital letters or punctuation when speaking and that follows in texts. 3. Explain how "lol" has evolved over the years. The phrase “lol” is generally thought to be short for “laughing out loud” (which it is), but these days it means differently, it has become a mark for empathy. For example, when a friend sends you a funny image you may respond with an “lol” to acknowledge the joke and so forth, it’s funny. Empathetically speaking though, if someone were to say that they’re tired from working so often another may respond by saying something along the lines of “lol, that sucks.”, not because it is funny but because yes, that very much does so does not sound appealing.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
