EMG 2303 CAT 1 a) A thin cylindrical vessel 450 mm internal diameter, 1 m long with walls 10 mm thick and closed at both ends is subjected to an internal pressure of 20 MN/m 2 . The Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the cylinder material are 200 GN/m 2 and 0.3 respectively. Determine; i) The circumferential and longitudinal stresses in the material. (3.5 marks) ii) The change in length and in diameter of the cylinder that results. (5.5 marks) b) A shaft ABC of length 3.5 m is used to transmit 50 kNm torque from a motor to a fan. The length and diameter of part AB are 2 m and 100 mm respectively while those of part BC are 1.5 m and 80 mm respectively. Given that the modulus of rigidity of the shaft material is 80 GN/m 2 , determine the total angle of twist caused by the torque.
