TAW | UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO Worksheet 3: Prenatal (Conception, Fetus, and Pregnancy) Name: Person Number: What are the three main Fetal Development Periods? Explain the characteristics of each period, and their importance. The three main Fetal Development Periods are the germinal, embryonic, and fetal periods. 1. The germinal period begins with conception and ends about two weeks later when the fertilized egg is implanted in the wall of the uterus. It is a time of rapid cell production-within 48 hours of fertilization divided to produce two cells. Blastula also forms and burrows into the lining of the uterus, breaking ting blood vessels to obtain nutrients. 2. Embryonic period: start when implantation is completed. Major structural development and embryonic disc growth occurs. During this period the umbilical cord attached baby to placenta. Placenta acts as the filter for nutrients and filters wastes. Embryonic disc also changes. The embryonic disk develops into three distinct layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. This is the most important period because the embryo is developing the body structures. 3. The fetal period lasts from the beginning of the third month until birth. During this period, the organs and systems mature and become functional. Many development events happen in this period, such as brain, senses, movements, hearing, etc. If a fetus reaches the week of 24 th , they have 50% chance of surviving outside the uterus. This is called age of viability. Fetal period is important because many organs are fully developed in this period. 1.What are three developmental trends for the fetus? Briefly explain what each trend entails. 1. Cephalocaudal trend: the sequence of growth that occurs first in the head and progresses downward (head-to-tail). 2. Proximodistal trend: the sequence of growth that occurs from the midline of the body outward (near-to-far). The upper arms and upper legs develop earlier than lower parts of these limbs.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
