QUALITY PATIENT INDICATOR PROPOSAL 2 Quality Patient Indicator Proposal- Milestone Two Proposal Care Support Patient safety is a top most of priority when it comes to delivering patient care. It is the health care providers who are responsible for the safety of their patients. With proper interventions, health care system can improve and prevent a lot of safety issues. Sufficient staffing is a vital part in delivering high quality health care to the patients. According to Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee nurses are an important component of the health care delivery system and that nurse staffing has impacts on safety (Clarke and Donaldson, 2008). Adequate staffing is crucial in order to create an environment for safe practice which focuses on quality care and positive outcomes. Quality of care is influenced by a lot of factors like knowledge, experience, working environment, availability of staffs, support services and fatigue (Clarke & Donaldson, 2008). Staffs are over loaded with work when there is understaffing which then leads to dissatisfaction and poor care. One of the main reason for poor quality care, readmission, and increased death rates and staff burn out is inadequate staffing (Clarke & Donaldson, 2008). Nursing group’s recommendation is to have California ratio as a standard policy for the better outcome of patient care (Rice, 2015). The safety and quality of patient care is directly related to the size and experience of the nursing workforce (Welton, 2007). Shortage of nurses and other staff increases the stress level and are forced to assume duties that are non-nursing. Value based Support With the growing acuity of patients and length of stay, we are in greater need of more staffing in the healthcare setting. “The main weakness of the regulatory approach is that hospitals are required to increase the number of registered nurses without receiving increased reimbursement for patient care” (Welton, 2007). Therefore, in order to compensate for the loss,

Facility should implement other ways to increase profitability by monitoring census on a daily basis and adjusting staffing accordingly. Cost containment, along with funding from the government has decreased profit margins, which only compounds the present nursing shortage (Kavanagh et al., 2012). Reimbursement will be influenced by nursing education, staffing skill mix, and nurse patient ratios.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
