Subject: General Psychology Name: Topic: Summary of Psych Sim : Brain and Behavior This simulation discussed the major divisions of the brain, structures associated with each division and the functions they perform. I learned that the brainstem is the area of the brain consisting of the Hindbrain (which also consists of Pons, Cerebellum and Medulla oblongata), midbrain and Thalamus. The functions of the brainstem include controlling basic life needs such as breathing, blood circulation and swallowing. Considering these functions it carries out, it is almost impossible for humans to live without the brainstem. It also accepts sensory information coming to the brain and sends out motor nerve information going from the brain to other parts of the body. In doing this, the brainstem works to filter and route this information to where they need to go. Another division of the brain is the midbrain. It is the area that separates the hindbrain, which is the lower portion of the brain from the forebrain, which is the upper portion of the brain.
