Week 2 What is Theatre? Why? Origins of Theatre – Cave men hunting stories (acting out how they hunted to other members of tribe) Egyptians: Ritual: Chanting for rain in the Nile river when it dried up, next year rain came so they continue the chant and add more things every year to this ritual (song, dance, costumes), soon becomes festival and then tradition (theatrical event) o Ritual- repeated action with an objective in mind Greeks Festival of dianisis- god of wine, fertility and theatre o Lots of plays o Month long o Plays done all day o 3 main writers Aeschylus – Prometheus Bound : P was a demi god, small Zeus took fire away from humans Esculous felt sorry for humans and took fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to humans Zeus was mad and punished p by tying him to a rock and cut him down the middle Birds would come all day and eat his innards At night the birds would go to sleep and P would magically be stitched up and fixed Cycle happened for eternity Lesson- For every great change in society, someone has to suffer o Compare to civil rights movement Sophocles – Oedipus Rex: Man born to a king Man went to oracle when kid was born and was told that son would kill him Decided to have the son killed Told wife to bring Oedipus down to soldiers to have them kill him Mom didn’t want to kill son, so gave him to soldiers and said to bring him far away to another family (king in another village) King raises him as his own

Oedipus goes to oracle when his gets older and he tells him that he will kill his father O runs away to the woods and meets his real father and his men They get into a fight and O kills real father O goes to village he was born in and meets his birth mother who is now a widow and marries her and they have 3 kids O later learns that he did kill his father and marry his mother Pulls his eyeballs from his head to blind himself Lesson- you cannot escape fate Euripides – Medea Medea is married to Jason from Argonauts Jason was off sailing the world doing amazing things and cheating on his wife Medea Comes back after 17 years of being away Medea kills all her children out of anger in front of him
