Chapter 10 textbook : Assessment of Personality December 4, 2013 11:50 PM Maximum performance: Ability tests - items are scored as either correct or incorrect - achievement and aptitude tests Typical response Attempt to measure the typical behaviour and characteristics of examinees - assess constructs such as personality, behaviour, attitudes, interests Personality: The relatively consistent patterns of thought, feeling, behaviour that characterize each person as a uni individual incorporates a host of emotional, motivational , interpersonal, attitude characteristics -both broad and narrow measures referred to as inventories Assessing Personality: even though we might not be consciously aware of it, we all engage in the assessment of personality on a regular basis o First efforts : Robert Woodworth Used by psychologists in different settings to answer different questions - list is exhaustive o Some major uses: Facilitate diagnosis and help to plan treatment Differential diagnosis: The process of identifying the correct disorder and ruling out compe diagnosis Repeated assessments can be used to monitor progress - reveal what is helping the client and what is not Used to enhance their client's self-understanding and self-actualization Some can be used to identify normal personality functioning and enhance individual performance Identify children with emotional and behaviour disorders that interfere with the ability to learn in schools Help determine which job applicants will become successful employees Answer questions relevant to legal proceedings Measure a multitude of constructs in a wide range of research What is therapeutic assessment?

o By offering insights back to clients in a supportive, sensitive and clinical way it can have a positive impact on the client o Collaboration between the assessor and client starts right from the beginning Can help to improve the client's accuracy and quality of their life story o Must help the client to feel safe and emotionally supported o Experience and intellectual insight are both important for change to occur o Last steps: creates an in vivo experience - devise ways for the client to handle the challenging situation Personality is a complex multidimensional construct o Measure multiple dimensions of personality o Multiple scales or factor scores o Vary greatly depending on purpose Ex: for the general population: based on introversion- extroversion , agreeableness, dependability RESPONSE SETS AND DISSIMULATION o Response set and dissimulation: test responses that misinterpret a person's true characteristics - person unconsciously responds in either a positive or negative manner individual purposefully misrepresents themselves it is dissimulation - individuals true characteristics are misrepresented and distorted o Present when completing maximum performance tests o Even bigger problem on typical performance tests Many have dimensions that are seen as socially desirable or undesirable o
