PEPE 1 Jacob Pepe HIST 1302.01 Spring 2018 Response to Documentary (Films on Demand) Week #1 Burns, Ken. “The Civil War: Episode 1-The Cause (1861).” BibMe: The Movie. DVD. Directed by Ken Burns. Walpole, 1990. Theme: Reconstruction Date: 27 January 2018 The film, “The Civil War: Episode 1-The Cause (1861)” directed by Ken Burns, creates a very vivid image on the events, feelings, and tragedies that occurred during the Civil War area and leading up to Reconstruction. The Civil War was a brutal set-piece in American History because it set up the grounds an enhanced version of the United States, a place where the people could grow and expand the nation from “sea to shining sea.” Manifest Destiny, America's belief that it is our GOD given right to expand the nation from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and embark on a mission to spread the faith of GOD. This set the reconstruction era into motion with the common mindset of American expansion. John Gast’s American Progress (1872)
