Settled in open, clear areas like pastoral England. -They don’t like forest. Keeping it away. Layout of communities: -1635: “On the Ordering of Towns” -God in the middle, meeting house, and houses very nearby. Tight communities. -1637: law in the Massachusetts Bay colony; may not build a house more than 1/2 mile from the meeting house -Field systems near the houses; pastures, gardens, etc, for crops -Roads went out to the pasture systems and came back -Beyond that: trees -”A wild and savage hue... full of snakes... wolves’ hideous howling.” -~Biblical sources!~ -The forest reminds us of how much we hate the Jewish exiles of way back when.
