Niacin (Nicotinic Acid) Vitamin B 3; fibrates P R O A C T I V I T Y Drug Class Water soluble vitamin Therapeutic Class Lipid-Lowering Agent MOA Increases activity of Lipase, which breaks down lipids. Reduces the metabolism or catabolism of cholesterol and triglycerides. Indications Effective in lowering triglyceride, total serum cholesterol, LDL levels: Antilipemic therapy Increase in HDL Treatment and prevention of niacin deficiency Contraindication s Major Side Effects Flushing (caused by histamine release; take aspirin 30 min prior to taking Niacin) Pruritus GI distress Drug Interactions Hypersensitivity to Niacin, Use cautiously in Gout ( Niacin will increase uric acid levels)
