THEMATIC ESSAY Engl 3080 Spring 2018 Kieran Lyons This essay will present an original, thesis-driven argument about the treatment of one or two themes in Things Fall Apart , Wide Sargasso Sea , The God of Small Things , one or both Salman Rushdie short stories, or one or more of the assigned selections from Rotten English. You may not write about the same text as the close reading essay without advance permission. Your essay should be substantially based on close reading of multiple passages from the text(s). Your essay should fully develop a clearly-defined argument related to a theme rather than offer a comprehensive exploration of a chosen theme. You do not need to use any other sources for this essay, though you may find them useful. I would encourage you to cite Beginning Postcolonialism if you choose to write about a relevant theme or topic. THEMES You may select one of the following themes or choose one of your own.
