Translational Research for Practice and Populations 2 Nursing Practice Identification North Kansas City School District is located in Kansas City, Missouri. It consists of four high schools, five middle schools, 22 elementary schools, an early childhood program, and two alternative schools. The Health Services Department within the district is comprised of a health service coordinator, administrative assistant, 34 registered nurses, and 13 practical nurses. The current onboarding process and training includes one week of school district orientation for administrative and benefits services. It also includes approximately one week of job shadowing if time permits, access to online links for general health room information, and assignment of an in-district nurse mentor to phone for questions. Over the years, it has become common practice for nurses to specialize in a specific field of nursing. When making the transition into a specialty such as school nursing, there is the potential for knowledge and skills deficit. The current onboarding process does not include a skills and knowledge assessment, orientation or formal training. The Health Service Department requires an updated evidence based school nursing orientation and training program for all newly hired nurses to standardize the quality of care in the school setting. Nursing Practice Description The Health Services Department’s current onboarding process and training includes one week of school district orientation for administrative and benefits services. This orientation allows time to register for benefits and discuss district policies regarding vacation time and pay disbursement. It does not cover health services training or policies. The current training also includes approximately one week of job shadowing if time permits. This time allows the new hire to shadow a nurse in the health room they will be assigned too. During this time, students continually report to the health room for care allowing very little time for training. Nurses in the

Currently, there is no training provided on the use of Canvas and there is outdated information stored there making it difficult to filter through documents to find relevant information. New nurses are also signed an in-district nurse mentor to phone for general questions. The health services coordinator is also available for question and suggestions; however, it is difficult to reach her during normal business hours. Due to the nursing shortage and turnover in our school district, it is common for a new nurse to be placed directly into a health room with no formal orientation and/or training.
