In 1910, during World war I the beginning of a new way to find a partner, a lady pen pal, and even a wife surfaced when soldiers decided to take advantage of the personal ads in the newspaper. Soldiers used The Daily Express to send out messages looking for a woman to possibly connect with. This was an instant hit with having almost 470 letters sent in by women who found the ad available in the paper. After soldiers revived their letters, some started coming home and getting married while on leave, also known as war weddings. But there were issues with the fact that soldiers were using personal ads to contact others, it gave the enemy a look into what was going on or an opportunity to give out information to the enemy calling it “playing into the hands of the enemy spy system.” S.
