Ohata Kenny Ohata Writing 150 Spring 2018 Professor Landau Tangled Roots How an individual lives their life is dictated by one’s own personal values. These values have been instilled to us from our parents as a child, many of which I still carry with me today. There is a heavy focus on academics, family, and hard work in the values that I mold my actions around. I would argue that almost all of the values I am presently living in accordance with are tied to my parent’s influence early in my childhood. Growing up Asian in America has provided me with many different cultural experiences that many will not face in their life. Both of my parents, being from Japan, traveled to the United States in aspiration to fulfill the American Dream and start a family that they could support. As I matured into my elementary school years, I started to learn what set of values I had been taught. I soon realized that these values are a set of principles or beliefs that are held important to one’s life. My parents had always emphasized the importance of academics and doing well in school. I attended after-school supplemental learning programs, and spent much of my free time learning or getting ahead in class. It began to be so routine, that focusing on academics seemed like a natural part of growing older. As I write this paper as a now considered adult, I realize that striving to learn and aiming for high marks really defines the person I am today. There is a constant drive that fuels me every day to apply myself and learn as much as I can. My parents’
