Kenny Ohata Professor Landau Writing 150 4 February 2018 Nicholas Carr Reflection I personally resonated with the Carr’s stance on our perception of automation, that we as humans do not fully understand its implications. Carr address that automation has many positive benefits, and I believe that a great reason to continue the progression of technology. I’m personally fascinated with technology, and it is the industry that I aim to work in one day. I agree with Carr that thanks to our bias for leisure over work, ease over effort, we overestimate automation’s benefits. There is a subtle deterioration of skill that is stripped away from us by the emergence of better automation, blurring the line of what are human skills and machine skills. My favorite line is “Many of the cognitive talents we’ve considered uniquely human, it turn out, are anything but.” Computers aren’t taking over professions entirely, but are taking over many aspects of them.
