These kind of viewpoints breed from blatant ignorance. Taking anthropology classes  has really taught me how important it is to form an opinion after reading up on things  from multiple sources, taking that prerogative yourself, not relying on being spoon- fed 100% accurate, unbiased information from your friends/family or one specific  source. It's really important to research the source, as that makes all the difference.  Harboring these kind of viewpoints is problematic because it's dangerous, to vilify such  large groups of people on such baseless statements. It's like a domino affect once one  person believes it and no one bothers to educate them. Needless to say, the first group  of people that comes to mind when you ask a query like this is Muslims. Just browsing
