CONFORMITY Objective: Recognize characteristics of informational social influence. After checking into a hotel, Emma suddenly hears pounding on her door. A man in a uniform is standing there telling her there’s smoke on a lower floor and the electricity is possibly going to shut off. She should prop her door open and evacuate as quickly as possible. Later, Emma returns to find that her laptop and jewelry have been stolen. She has fallen victim to informational social influence. In this situation, Emma was quite encouraged to conform in that informational social influence because of all these reasons: to see others as a source of information to guide our behaviors, to believe that others’ interpretation of an ambiguous situation is more correct than ours and will help us choose an appropriate course of action, what other people are doing or saying is right, to think other people are experts Emma was told that there was smoke on a lower floor and she believed and right away she did what she was told because she saw the man the source of information to guide her behavior at that moment. If there was nobody to tell her what to do, she might have taken her laptop and jewelry with her when he noticed there was smoke. However, she did not ponder when the man tell her to prop her door open and evacuate immediately, she simply conformed.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
