ROM COM Genre Evolution They tend not to be clean cut or clear. They overlap. Same as genres, there are subgenres. RomComZom. A subgenre within a subgenre. Sex Comedies - Emphasis on hyper masculinity/femininity: physicality and emotions highly exaggerated - The 50s and 60s Seen as middlebrow sex-comedies: all about sex without sex  Wrong Partner's Narrative Functions This character complicates and prolong the narrative, delay resolution Functions 1. Generate Tension 2. Focus of jokes Classic Romantic Comedy 1. Basic narrative structure - boy meets girl, boys loses girl, boy gets girl in the end 2. Differences between the man and the woman are eventually overcome  commitment comedies focus on the establishment of the central couple.  reaffirmation comedies concentrate on the re-uniting of the couple after circumstances at the beginning of the film have succeeded in separating them. Nervous Romance RC as genre threatened by: Individual fulfillment Sex as instrument, not as fulfillment of couple Blame placed on women (feminism) New Romance (Steve Neale) Main features of this genre 1. New Romance Return to classic romance but women are more independent but still need to be satisfied by having a male partner  Difference between Romantic Comedy & Nervous Romance Differences will ultimately be overcome (RC) Vs. Differences are too big. Characters are too selfish (NR) Women: post-feminist emotional wilderness narcissistic personalities self-seeking desires Men: try to regain self-respect relationships with women they can control - Narrative structure is fragmented and non-linear - Relationship is unsuccessful because both characters cannot find common ground without risking a damaging loss of self. - Male figure is more "emotional" unstable - destabilizing the traditional notions of masculinity   Humour It arises out of unexpected breaks in narrative logic and continuity. It's success involves our expectations being thwarted.  Eccentricity (Moonstruck) Cher cures Cage from his eccentricity, as she becomes dear to him. He resolves her tireless quest for love free of bad luck.  Self Reflexive (Moonstruck) As a new romance, Moon Struck is aware of itself, by presenting over the top eccentricity of Cage and the unlikely romance that follows. "I don't care if I burn in hell, I don't care if you burn in hell"  New Romance (Moon Struck) Cher's employment and independence is rarely featured in her life because according to New Romance females although independent and succesful have an empty existence until they fall in love.
