Unformatted text preview: Barbary Pirates (May 14, 1801) In present day Libya (tripeli), the badshah ordered the American flag pole to be chopped down. War is declared by the nation of Tripeli against America. The first war on terrorism that Americans fight The pirates were capturing American ships and holding people hostage or selling people to slavery Traditionally, American ships were protected by the British flag, but after becoming independent, this was no longer true When the pirates occupied American shipswe tried to settle with them We gave the Barbary pirates money (which was supposed to be used to build ships) We negotiated $642,000 to Al Jeers, and we promised them annually $21,000 so they wouldnt attack ships. We paid Tripali $56,000. Barbary pirates were state-sanctioned pirates, and we paid them off. Pirates get jealous of each other, Tripali asks why we werent giving them shipswe refuse, they declare war....
