Identify 5 subject areas from Nursing Theory that you have identified as a weakness in your learning. 1. Nursing Theorists and contributions a. Grand Theories 1. Kings Theory of goal attainment- persons must be motivated and guided to understand the importance of using new and consistent behaviors in order to attain the goal. Human beings are open systems constantly interacting with the environment. Decision making is a shared collaborative process where nurse and client share information for the purpose of setting and reaching goals. (Whetsell, Gonzalez, & Moreno-Ferguson, 2015). 2. Leininger’s theory of cultural diversity- Used in education and research. Acknowledges similarities and differences across cultures. Action roles nurses may take are 1) cultural preservation/maintenance 2) cultural care accommodation 3) cultural are repatterning/restructuring. Refers to professional actions in order to preserve patient cultural and physical well- being (Purnell, 2015). 3. Neuman’s theory of health of expanding consciousness- systems based perspective with a unifying focus for approaching a wide range of nursing concerns. Examines the relationship between nursing interventions and patient response to stressors. Contains a wellness, “wholistic”, multidimensional perspective. Primary prevention is the point of entry into healthcare. Used to guide practice and nursing education. Compels students to use logic, deduction, and induction (Whetsell, Gonzalez, & Moreno-Ferguson, 2015). b. Middle range theories 1. Benner’s level of skill acquisition- based on Dreyfus model. Has five levels of nursing practice. 1) novice 2) advanced beginner 3) competent 4) proficient 5)

expert. These stages are used in nursing practice to test competency. The expert competency can also be classified into the domains of nursing practice. This model helps to uncover meaning and knowledge embedded into practice (Stewart, 2015).
